RESEARCH ACTIVITY

The research points to oxidative modifications/damages caused by free radicals on biological models (ex-vivo hearts, cell cultures, lipoproteins) in physio-pathological conditions (ischemic preconditioning, cardiovascular deconditioning, and atherosclerosis). In the last years, the research has been focused on gravity-dependent modulations in the proliferation and differentiation of different cells (Unsworth B.R.et al., 1998) in particular of endothelial cells, lymphocytes and yeast. Our aim is to exploit the advantages of modelled microgravity in the field of some ground biotechnological applications of industrial relevance (autologous stem-cell therapy, tissue engineering, increased productivity of pharmaceutical products) (Bradamante S. 2005).

Are these researches of interest in dental practice?

1.
A lot of dental procedures utilize products (chemical compounds) that cause an oxidative stress, for example:
• tooth bleaching;
• disinfection/sterilization with peroxygens;
• disinfection of dental unit water system.

2.
Environmental microbial contamination is a common risk in space station and dental office. Both systems have structural features (small dimension, limited air exchange and complex and miniaturized instrumentation) that favour this condition. Alterations in the virulence potential and increased bacterial resistance have been reported in simulated microgravity. Many serious adverse physiological changes occur during spaceflight. Some of these include bone deterioration, cardiovascular deconditioning and impaired immune system function. Mainly, host immune mechanism impairment and increased bacterial pathogenesis might results in severe infections during long-term human exploration of space. Microbial monitoring and disinfection abroad spacecraft is becoming increasingly important.

3.
Nowadays, there is a big demand for the development of construct technologies aimed at producing and characterizing 3D cell devices (artificial tissue, organoids..) to be used in health care and pharmaceutical industry (Martin I et al., 2004). Microgravity is becoming an unconventional and attractive venue for the generation of replacement organs for transplantation. Microgravity favours tissue formation by mainly preventing structural deformation and favouring 3D assembly. Future studies of modelled microgravity in this field will advantage some ground biotechnological applications of industrial relevance (autologous stem-cell therapy, tissue engineering, increased productivity of pharmaceutical products).
